Hey, parents: We have the perfect solution to keeping your kids entertained all summer long.

Summer is coming.

Kids are going to be hanging around the house—a lot.

Looking to give them something to do that doesn’t involve making a mess, plowing through a week’s worth of groceries in a single morning, or becoming one with their video game system? We have the perfect answer: books.

More specifically, fantasy books, many of which are a) entertaining, b) creative, and c) exciting in a way that will keep even your most reluctant reader turning pages instead of turning your house upside down. (Bonus points if there is more than one book in the series.)

We asked our in-house Kids Fiction experts for their Top 5 Kids Fantasy recommendations, and here’s the roundup. Start shopping now and set yourself up for a summer of peace and quiet.

1. Skandar and the Unicorn Thief

Recently released and destined to become a mainstay in the world of children's literature, this middle-grade fantasy novel is magical, adventurous, and packed with the action kids crave. The tale centers on young unicorn rider Skandar and his newfound friends as they navigate a world of epic sky battles, wild unicorns, and dangerous missions. No wonder this is a Buyer's Pick!

2. Shinji Takahashi and the Mark of the Coatl

High-tech wizardry, old-world legends, and a little bit of magic create an epic adventure perfect for kids seeking a little more excitement than usual this summer. Starring an ordinary kid whose life suddenly becomes anything but as he embarks on an epic journey through time and place, this book is based on the Walt Disney Parks' Society of Explorers and Adventurers lore.

3. Keeper of the Lost Cities

Start with Book 1 of this popular series by award-winning writer Shannon Messenger—who happens to be our Reading Ambassador for this year's Summer Reading Adventure—and your kids won't stop until they've read every page of every book available (Book 9 is due out later this year). Not a bad investment, if you ask us.

4. Dungeon Academy: A Goblin Problem

This full-color, early chapter book for budding D&D fans features characters from the popular middle grade series Dungeon Academy—with a story geared for younger readers. In it, a human disguises herself as a minotaur in order to blend in at the Academy. When she gains a reputation as a "Bully Crusher," will her cover be blown?

5. Wings of Fire

Book 14 is the most recent release from this hit series, but if your child hasn't read from the start, they're in for a treat! This thrilling fantasy series is an adventure lover's favorite, featuring dragons, prophecies, danger, and destiny blended with strong messages of friendship and family.
